Bathing your baby can feel a little intimidating at first, but once you understand the basics, it can become a simple, and even enjoyable, part of your routine.
The good news? Newborns don’t need daily baths. In fact, 2-3 times per week is usually enough in the early weeks, as long as you’re keeping their diaper area clean and gently wiping their face, neck, and hands as needed.
When to Start Bathing Your Baby
Until your baby’s umbilical cord stump falls off, stick with sponge baths. Once it’s healed, you can begin using a baby tub or sink for short, gentle baths.
How to Bathe Your Baby Safely
Keep things simple and safe with these basics:
- Use warm (not hot) water. Always test it with your wrist
- Keep one hand on your baby at all times
- Use a small amount of mild, fragrance-free baby soap
- Limit baths to about 5-10 minutes
- Have everything you need within arm’s reach before you start
Babies can get cold quickly, so drying them off and getting them dressed right after the bath is key.
Making Bath Time Easier
Bathing your baby doesn’t have to be stressful. Many parents find it helpful to:
- Bathe baby at the same time of day for consistency
- Keep the room warm and calm
- Turn it into a soothing part of a bedtime routine
And if your baby doesn’t love baths right away, that’s completely normal. It often just takes a little time.
